Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
特別展を(ご覧になる)皆様は入館前に入口の注意事項をお読みください。
Visitors viewing the special exhibition, please read the notice at the entrance before entering the museum.
1ご覧になる ✓
Correct. 「ご覧になる」 is the honorific form of 「見る」; the subject is the visiting "guests" (the other party), and it corresponds to the honorific table in grammar point ① of this lesson
2ご覧に入れる
「ご覧に入れる」 is the humble form of 「見せる」 (showing something to the other party), so the subject is reversed: here the guests are looking, not us showing something to the guests
3拝見する
「拝見する」 is the humble form of 「見る」, used for oneself (the speaker's side); it cannot be used when the subject is the guests
4拝見なさる
「拝見なさる」 mixes the humble 「拝見」 with the honorific 「なさる」, which is an incorrect use of keigo and does not work
Q2
ご注文を( )。ご利用ありがとうございます。
Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
ご注文を(うけたまわりました)。ご利用ありがとうございます。
We have received your order. Thank you for your patronage.
1いたしました
「いたしました」 is the humble form of 「する」, but placing the order is something the customer does, not something the shop "does," so the meaning does not fit
2うけたまわりました ✓
Correct. 「うけたまわりました」 is the humble 「承る」 (to hear / to accept), meaning that the shop (humbly) "has accepted" the customer's order; it corresponds to grammar point ① of this lesson
3なさいました
「なさいました」 is the honorific form of 「する」, but here the shop (the speaker's own side) is speaking, so using an honorific that raises oneself is inappropriate
4されました
「されました」 is the passive-form honorific of 「する」; it likewise uses an honorific for "oneself," which is inappropriate
Q3
先生から貴重な資料を( )ことは、私の研究の大きな助けになりました。本当にありがとうございました。
Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
先生から貴重な資料を(拝借できました)ことは、私の研究の大きな助けになりました。本当にありがとうございました。
Being able to borrow valuable materials from my professor was a great help to my research. Thank you very much indeed.
1拝見できました
「拝見できました」 is the humble 「拝見」 of 「見る」, but the sentence is about the act of "borrowing" materials, not "looking," so the meaning does not fit
2拝借できました ✓
Correct. 「拝借できました」 is the humble 「拝借する」 of 「借りる」: I (humbly) was able to "borrow" the materials from the professor; it corresponds to grammar point ① of this lesson
3お貸しになりました
「お貸しになりました」 is the honorific of 「貸す」 (to lend), but the subject should be "I" borrowing, not the professor lending, and a humble form rather than an honorific is needed here
4お見えになりました
「お見えになりました」 is the honorific of 「来る」 and has nothing to do with borrowing materials
Q4
先生は新内閣についてどう( )か。
Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
先生は新内閣についてどう(お考えです)か。
Professor, what do you think about the new cabinet?
1存じます
「存じます」 is the humble form of 「思う・知っている」; using it for the other party (the professor) is a keigo error, since an honorific should be used to raise the professor
2おわかりです
「おわかりです」 means "you understand"; the question asks for an "opinion or view," not whether the person understands, so the meaning does not fit
3お考えです ✓
Correct. 「お考えです」 is the honorific of 「考える(思う)」 = "what do you think"; honorifics are used when asking the other party (the professor) for an opinion, and it contrasts with the humble forms in grammar point ① of this lesson
4存じ上げます
「存じ上げます」 is likewise a humble form (a more formal version of 「存じる」); using it for the other party is still a keigo error
Q5
A:山本先生、今度の日曜日はお宅に( )か。
B:あいにく日曜日はちょっと…。
Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
A:山本先生、今度の日曜日はお宅に(おいでになります)か。
B:あいにく日曜日はちょっと…。
A: Professor Yamamoto, will you be at home this Sunday? B: Unfortunately, this Sunday is a bit difficult...
1おこしになります
「おこしになります」 would properly be 「お越しになる」, but it means "to come/go" (a verb of motion), so it does not correspond to the meaning of 「いる」 (to be at home); it is less precise than 2
2おいでになります ✓
Correct. 「おいでになります」 is the honorific shared by 「行く・来る・いる」, and here it expresses 「いる」, "will you be at home (on Sunday)"; it corresponds to grammar point ① of this lesson
3お見えになります
「お見えになります」 is the honorific of 「来る」 (to visit), but the question asks whether the person will be at home, not whether they will come, so the meaning does not fit
4おります
「おります」 is the humble form of 「いる」; using it for the other party (Professor Yamamoto) is a keigo error, since an honorific should be used
Q6
こちらの商品はセール品でございますので、交換はご遠慮( )。
Related grammar point 2 ご確認願えますでしょうか
こちらの商品はセール品でございますので、交換はご遠慮(願います)。
This item is a sale item, so exchanges are not accepted.
1願います ✓
Correct. 「ご遠慮願います」 = "please refrain from...," which is the 「お/ご〜願う」 usage of grammar point ② of this lesson, formally asking customers not to exchange items
2存じます
「存じます」 is the humble form of 「思う」 and makes no sense combined with 「ご遠慮」
3いたしません
「いたしません」 is the humble form of 「する」 meaning "we do not," but the point is to ask the "customers" to cooperate, not to say what the shop itself does not do
4うけたまわりません
「うけたまわりません」 is the negative of 「承る」, "we do not accept," and does not fit the context of asking customers to refrain from exchanges
Q7
お忙しいところ恐縮ですが、貴社主催のツアーについて、詳細を教えて( )と存じます。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
Related grammar point 4 ご連絡いただければと思います
お忙しいところ恐縮ですが、貴社主催のツアーについて、詳細を教えて(いただければ)と存じます。どうぞよろしくお願いします。
I am sorry to trouble you when you are so busy, but regarding the tour hosted by your company, I would appreciate it if you could tell me the details. Thank you in advance.
1さしあげて
「さしあげて」 is the humble form of 「あげる」 (I give to the other party), but the action of 「教えて」 should be done by the other party (your company) for me, so the subject is reversed
2さしあげれば
「さしあげれば」 is likewise the 「あげる」 type with the reversed subject, and it is not followed by the full pattern 「〜ばと思う」 either
3いただけて
「いただけて」 is the humble form of 「もらう」, and the direction is right (the other party tells me), but it lacks the form 「〜ばと思う」 of grammar point ④ of this lesson, which expresses a tactful request
4いただければ ✓
Correct. 「いただければと存じます」 is a more formal way of saying 「いただければと思います」 and corresponds to grammar point ④ of this lesson, tactfully asking the other party to tell you the details
Part 2: Building sentences
Put the 4 options into slots 1–4 in order, then pick the one that lands in the ★ slot.
Q1
お客様が12★4ください。
Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
お客様が1お見えになったら22階の3★応接室に4ご案内してください。
Order: 2 → 1 → 4 → 3 ★ = option 4
When the customer arrives, please show them to the reception room on the 2nd floor.
How the sentence is built
First comes 「お見えになったら」 (grammar point ① of this lesson: the honorific 「お見えになる」 of 「来る」 plus 「たら」, when the customer arrives); then 「2階の」, which modifies 「応接室」, followed by 「応接室に」 indicating the place to which they are guided; and finally 「ご案内して」, which joins 「ください」 at the end of the sentence to form 「ご案内してください」. The ★ falls on the third item, 「応接室に」. Full sentence: お客様が お見えになったら 2階の 応接室に★ ご案内して ください。
Q2
この機会にぜひ12★4申し上げます。
Related grammar point 3 ご説明申し上げたい
この機会にぜひ1新商品を2お試し3★くださいますよう4ご案内申し上げます。
Order: 3 → 2 → 4 → 1 ★ = option 4
On this occasion, we respectfully invite you to be sure to try our new products.
How the sentence is built
First comes the object 「新商品を」, then 「お試し」, then 「くださいますよう」, forming 「新商品をお試しくださいますよう」 (we ask that you try our new products); and finally 「ご案内」, which joins 「申し上げます」 at the end of the sentence to form 「ご案内申し上げます」 of grammar point ③ of this lesson, 「ご+N+申し上げる」. The ★ falls on the third item, 「くださいますよう」. Full sentence: この機会にぜひ 新商品を お試し くださいますよう★ ご案内 申し上げます。
Q3
商品が12★4と思います。
Related grammar point 4 ご連絡いただければと思います
商品が1入荷するまで2しばらく3★お待ち4いただければと思います。
Order: 1 → 4 → 3 → 2 ★ = option 3
Until the products arrive in stock, I would appreciate it if you could wait a little while.
How the sentence is built
First comes 「入荷するまで」, which joins the preceding 「商品が」 to form 「商品が入荷するまで」 (until the products arrive in stock); then the adverb 「しばらく」, then 「お待ち」, and finally 「いただければ」, forming 「お待ちいただければ」, which together with 「と思います」 at the end of the sentence makes grammar point ④ of this lesson, 「Vば+と思う」, tactfully asking the other party to wait. The ★ falls on the third item, 「お待ち」. Full sentence: 商品が 入荷するまで しばらく お待ち★ いただければ と思います。
Part 3: Grammar in a passage
Blank 1
Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
1なさいました
「なさいました」 is the honorific form of 「する」, but delivering the goods is something our company (the speaker's own side) does, so using an honorific that raises oneself is inappropriate
2いたしました ✓
Correct. 「いたしました」 is the humble form of 「する」: our company (humbly) "has carried out the delivery"; it corresponds to the humble-language system of grammar point ① of this lesson
3ございました
「ございました」 is the formal form of 「ある」 and is not suitable as a replacement for the action 「する」 (to deliver)
4まいりました
「まいりました」 is the humble form of 「行く・来る」, but 「お届け」 is the act of delivering itself, not "coming or going," so the meaning does not fit
Blank 2
Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
1おります ✓
Correct. 「おります」 is the humble form of 「いる」; the formal version of 「万全を期している」 is 「万全を期しております」, meaning that our company is always doing its utmost to ensure perfect quality control. 「Vております」 is the most common humble expression in business writing
2いたします
「いたします」 is the humble form of 「する」 and attaches to Sino-Japanese nouns or to 「お/ご+Vます」 (as in 「ご連絡いたします」); it cannot follow the te-form 「期して」, so 「期していたします」 does not work
3存じます
「存じます」 is the humble form of 「思う・知る」; it cannot follow the te-form 「期して」, and its meaning does not connect to "doing one's utmost" either
4申し上げます
「申し上げます」 is the humble form of 「言う」, or is used in 「お/ご〜申し上げる」 of grammar point ③ of this lesson; it cannot follow the te-form 「期して」
Blank 3
Related grammar point 1 佐々木様がお見えになりました
1存じましたら
「存じましたら」 is the humble form of 「思う」, but "in the unlikely event that there is a defective item" is not "our own thought," so the meaning does not fit
2ございましたら ✓
Correct. 「ございましたら」 is the formal form of 「ある」, "if there is"; for "if there happens to be a defective item," 「ございましたら」 is the most natural, and it corresponds to grammar point ① of this lesson
3ご覧に入れましたら
「ご覧に入れましたら」 is the humble form of 「見せる」 and has nothing to do with the objective circumstance of a defective item turning up
4いたしましたら
「いたしましたら」 is the humble form of 「する」, but it is the subject "defective items" themselves that "turn up," not our company that "does" something
Blank 4
Related grammar point 3 ご説明申し上げたい
1ございます
「ございます」 is the formal form of 「ある」; with 「お願い」 the fixed honorific combination 「お願い申し上げます」 should be used, not 「ございます」
2おります
「おります」 is the humble form of 「いる」 and does not work together with 「お願い」
3まいります
「まいります」 is the humble form of 「行く・来る」 and does not work together with 「お願い」
4申し上げます ✓
Correct. 「お願い申し上げます」 is the fixed combination of 「お/ご〜申し上げる」 in grammar point ③ of this lesson, formally "requesting" that the other party get in touch; compare the lesson's example 「ご寄付をお願い申し上げます」

男の人と女の人が電話で話しています。
Q1
問 男の人が電話で一番したかったことは何ですか。
1先日招待してもらったお礼を言うこと
2花瓶を割ったことを伝えること
3買った花瓶を返すこと
4花瓶を買った店を聞くこと ✓
What did the man most want to do with this phone call?
When the man makes this call, he first exchanges some polite apologies: he apologizes for 「とんだこと」 (the mishap, that is, breaking the vase), but this is only a lead-in (rules out 2, since the other person already knew about the broken vase and it is not new information to be conveyed by this call; also rules out 1, since thanking her for the invitation is likewise only a courtesy). The real purpose of the call is revealed only in the last line: 「あの花瓶と同じ物があれば買い求めてお返しさせていただきたいと存じますので、ぜひお店を教えていただきたいと思いまして…」 — he wants to buy the same kind of vase as compensation, so he wants to find out which store it was bought at. The act of "buying and returning" has not yet happened, and he must first know where the store is, so 3 (returning a vase he has bought) is ruled out, since at this point he has not bought any vase. → 花瓶を買った店を聞くこと. Answer 4.
Grammar in this question
〜させていただきたい:I would like to do... (humbly expressing what one wants to do). 「お返しさせていただきたい」 = I would like to make restitution.
〜と存じます:(Humble) I think that.... 「存じる」 is the humble form of 「思う」.
Key vocabulary
招待(しょうたい)する to invite
とんだこと a mishap, an unexpected blunder
買い求める(かいもとめる) to buy, to procure

M もしもし、高橋様のお宅でしょうか。
Hello, is this the Takahashi residence?
F はい。
Yes.
M 私、小林と申します。
My name is Kobayashi.
F ああ、小林さん。先日はわざわざお越しいただいて、ありがとうございました。
Oh, Mr. Kobayashi. Thank you for going out of your way to come the other day.
M いえ。せっかくご招待いただきましたのに、とんだことをいたしまして、本当に申し訳ございませんでした。
Not at all. You were kind enough to invite me, and yet I caused such a terrible mishap. I am truly very sorry.
F いいえ、どうぞお気になさらず…。
No, please don't worry about it...
M いえ、あのー、たいへん失礼ですが、あの花瓶と同じ物があれば買い求めてお返しさせていただきたいと存じますので、ぜひお店を教えていただきたいと思いまして…。
No, well, I am very sorry to say this, but if there is a vase just like that one, I would like to buy it and return one to you, so I was hoping you could tell me which store it came from...
Q1
Listen to this sentence first
問 では、明日3時に当社へお越しください。
Then, please come to our company at 3 o'clock tomorrow.
1はい、明日3時にお伺いいたします。 ✓
Yes, I will call on you at 3 o'clock tomorrow.
2はい、明日3時にいらっしゃいます。
Yes, you will come at 3 o'clock tomorrow.
3はい、明日3時にお待ちしています。
Yes, I will be waiting here at 3 o'clock tomorrow.
The other person says 「明日3時に当社へお越しください」 — "please come (お越し, the honorific of 来る) to our company at 3 tomorrow." When answering that you will "go" to the other party, you should use 「伺う」, the humble form of 「行く」: 「はい、明日3時にお伺いいたします」, which corresponds to the humble-language system of grammar point ① of this lesson. 2 「いらっしゃいます」 is the honorific of 「行く・来る」; using it for yourself is a keigo error, since it turns "I will go" into "you will come" and reverses the subject. 3 「お待ちしています」 = "I will be waiting here," which gets the direction completely wrong: the other party is asking "me" to come over, not "me" waiting for them. Answer 1.
Grammar in this question
〜てください:Please do... (honorific request form). 「お越しください」 = please come.
Key vocabulary
当社(とうしゃ) our company
Q2
Listen to this sentence first
問 部長、トニー株式会社の山本様が受け付けにお見えです。
Department Head, Mr./Ms. Yamamoto of Tony Corporation has arrived at the reception desk.
1トニー株式会社の部長は山本さんじゃないよ。
The department head at Tony Corporation isn't Yamamoto.
2あ、そう。受け付けに見えるよ。
Oh, is that so? You can see it from the reception desk.
3あ、そう。じゃ、すぐ行くよ。 ✓
Oh, is that so? Then I'll go right away.
A subordinate reports to the department head: 「トニー株式会社の山本様が受け付けにお見えです」. 「お見えです」 is the polite form of 「お見えになる」, the honorific of 「来る」 in grammar point ① of this lesson, meaning "Mr./Ms. Yamamoto has arrived at the reception desk." On hearing that the guest has already arrived, the most natural reaction is to go and meet the guest right away: 「あ、そう。じゃ、すぐ行くよ」. 1 responds as if the report were about who the department head of Tony Co. is, which is beside the point of what 「お見えです」 reports (it says nothing about who the department head is). 2 takes the honorific 「お見えです」 (has arrived) as the plain verb 「見える」 (to be visible), a misreading of the keigo based on its surface form. Answer 3.
Grammar in this question
お見えです:The formal honorific for "has arrived": a polite form of the honorific 「お見えになる」 of 「来る」 in grammar point ① of this lesson.
Key vocabulary
受け付け(うけつけ) reception desk
