As science and technology advance, in terms of knowledge, we have come to understand far more than we did in the past. Regarding the universe, too, various facts have been gradually revealed.
For example, in the past people did not even know that black holes existed, but as techniques such as astronomical observation advanced, their existence became known. Furthermore, as investigation progressed, it has gradually become clear that black holes do not merely exist out there but are also expanding.
However, as various facts come to light, more questions are also arising: what exactly black holes are, why they exist, and what will happen if they keep expanding.
People used to hope that by acquiring knowledge they would be able to understand everything. Yet even though scientists continue their research every day, the mysteries of the universe only grow deeper.

社長、駅向こうのエース電気、また値下げセールやってますよ。うちも値下げセールやりましょうよ!
やりたくても、これ以上安くするのは経営上無理なんだよ。だから、その分、サービスで勝負したいんだ。今は修理サービスだけだし…。
ほかの店がやらないようなのじゃないとだめですよね。
うちは年配のお客様が多いだろ?この点から見て、何か考えられないかな。
わかりました。みんなで考えてみます。
President, Ace Denki across from the station is having another price-cut sale. Let's hold a price-cut sale too!
Even if we wanted to, cutting prices any further is not feasible for the business. So I want to compete on service instead. Right now, we only have a repair service...
It has to be something other shops don't do, doesn't it?
We have a lot of older customers, don't we? Judging from that, can't we think of something?
Understood. We'll all think about it together.
問 これから考えることは何ですか。
1値下げセールについて
2店の経営状態について
3新しいサービスについて ✓
4修理サービスについて
What will they think about next?
The question asks "What will they think about next?" At the start, the female employee proposes a "price-cut sale," but the president flatly refuses: 「これ以上安くするのは経営上無理なんだよ」 (cutting prices any further is not feasible for the business), and turns to a direction of competing on service (rules out 1). The president says 「今は修理サービスだけだし…」, which hints that the current service is limited, but that merely describes the present situation and is not "what they will do next" (rules out 4). Nowhere in the conversation is it mentioned that the business's financial condition itself is a problem to be discussed (rules out 2). What actually leads to the next action is the president's last line: 「うちは年配のお客様が多いだろ?この点から見て、何か考えられないかな」 — thinking up a new service based on the characteristics of the shop's customer base, and the employee responds 「みんなで考えてみます」. → 新しいサービスについて. Answer 3.

講演会で、先生が勉強する時間について話しています。
Q1
問 この先生はいつ勉強したらよく覚えられると言っていますか。
1朝、ベッドの中で
2朝、起きてすぐ
3夜、寝る前 ✓
4夜、寝ている間
When does this professor say you can remember best if you study?
Professor Honda's main point is: 「記憶する必要がある勉強は、夜寝る前にしたほうが効果的だと言えるでしょうね」 — studying material you need to memorize is more effective at night before bed, because 「人間の脳は眠っている間にその日に経験したことを再生して、記憶を強化する」「特に再生しているのは寝る直前の時間帯の情報」 (the brain replays the day's experiences during sleep, especially the information from just before sleep). 1 「朝、ベッドの中で」 and 2 「朝、起きてすぐ」 — he admits 「確かに朝は集中力が高くなります」, but that only says concentration is high, not that memory is better. 4 「夜、寝ている間」 — the brain replays and strengthens memories during sleep, but the act of studying itself must be done before sleep, not during it. → 夜、寝る前. Answer 3.

What did the woman decide to do?
The woman (a student) is at first somewhat hesitant: 「でも、朝早起きして勉強したほうが、頭がすっきりしているし集中できていいんだけどな」 — she feels that studying in the morning works well, too, which hints that she does not want to give up her habit of getting up early to study. The man tells her "you don't have to force yourself to change," and the woman replies: 「まあね。朝型生活は続けるとして、夜寝る前にもう一度復習しよう」 — 「続けるとして」 means "I'll keep my morning habit," and 「もう一度復習しよう」 means "I'll add a review at night," that is, she decided to study both morning and night (朝も夜も勉強することにした). 1 mentions only the morning and omits the evening review she has decided to add. 2 mentions only the evening and omits the early-rising habit she explicitly says she will 「続ける」. 4 is the complete opposite of her decision. Answer 3.

F 最近は朝早起きして勉強する人も増えていますが、実際にはいつ勉強したら効果的なのでしょうか。本日は脳科学がご専門の本田先生にお話を伺います。
Recently more and more people are getting up early to study, but when is it actually effective to study? Today we have Professor Honda, who specializes in brain science, to talk with us.
M 確かに朝は集中力が高くなりますね。
It's true that concentration is higher in the morning.
M しかし記憶の面から言うと、人間の脳は眠っている間にその日に経験したことを再生して、記憶を強化することがわかっているんです。
But from the standpoint of memory, it is known that during sleep the human brain replays what it experienced that day, strengthening memory.
M 特に再生しているのは寝る直前の時間帯の情報です。このことから、記憶する必要がある勉強は、夜寝る前にしたほうが効果的だと言えるでしょうね。
What is replayed in particular is the information from just before going to sleep. From this, it can be said that studying material that you need to memorize is more effective when done at night before bed.
M ベッドに入って、目をつぶるだけでも脳内の情報整理には効果があるんですよ。
Even just getting into bed and closing your eyes has an effect on the brain's organizing of information.
M これ、寝る前に勉強したほうが、よく頭に入るということだよね。やっぱり、試験勉強は夜ってことだね。ぼくは間違ってなかったんだ。
So that means studying before bed makes things stick better. As I thought, exam study is best done at night. I wasn't wrong after all.
F でも、朝早起きして勉強したほうが、頭がすっきりしているし集中できていいんだけどな。
But studying after waking up early makes my head feel clear and lets me concentrate, which is nice, too.
M ぼくは今までどおり勉強するよ。でも君は無理に変えることはないんじゃない?
I'll keep studying the way I have. But you don't have to force yourself to change, do you?
F まあね。朝型生活は続けるとして、夜寝る前にもう一度復習しよう。そうすれば、もっと覚えられるということだよね。
I guess so. I'll keep my morning routine and review once more at night before bed. That way I should be able to remember even more.
M 中田さん、まじめだねえ。
You're so conscientious, Nakada.

問 これ、宇宙人の写真だって。でもあり得ない話じゃないよね。
They say this is a photo of an alien. But it's not impossible, is it?
1うん、私も宇宙人はいないと思う。
Yes, I don't think aliens exist either.
2え?宇宙人がいると思っているの? ✓
Huh? Do you think aliens exist?
3何言ってるの、それは宇宙人の話よ。
What are you talking about? That's a story about aliens.
The other person says 「これ、宇宙人の写真だって。でもあり得ない話じゃないよね」 — this uses the colloquial 「あり得ない」 of grammar point ⑦ of this lesson, 「あり得る/得ない」, and 「あり得ない話じゃない」 means "it's not an impossible thing," hinting that the speaker is inclined to believe in aliens. The most natural reply is to be surprised at this attitude and ask back to confirm: 「え?宇宙人がいると思っているの?」. 1 「うん、私も宇宙人はいないと思う」 takes the opposite stance from the speaker's "it's not impossible" (implying belief), so it does not answer what was said. 3 「何言ってるの、それは宇宙人の話よ」 is off the point and makes no sense by itself (what the speaker said was already about a photo of aliens). Answer 2.
Grammar in this question
〜(得)ない:Cannot be.../impossible (colloquial use of 「得る/得ない」, grammar point ⑦ of this lesson). 「あり得ない話じゃない」 = it's not an impossible thing.
Key vocabulary
宇宙人(うちゅうじん) alien, extraterrestrial

問 今朝の新聞には景気が回復しつつあるって書いてあったけど、どう思う?
This morning's newspaper said the economy is recovering. What do you think?
1ぼくもそう思うよ。うちの会社も注文が増えているしね。 ✓
I think so, too. Orders at our company are increasing as well.
2ぼくもそう思うよ。うちの会社も注文が減っているしね。
I think so, too. Orders at our company are decreasing as well.
3ぼくもそう思うよ。仕事が全然増えないもん。
I think so, too. Work just isn't increasing at all.
The other person asks what you think about 「景気が回復しつつある」 (grammar point ⑫ of this lesson, 「つつある」: the economy is gradually recovering). To agree with this "recovering" judgment, the example that follows must also be one of things "improving" for the logic to hold: 「うちの会社も注文が増えているしね」 (orders at our company are also increasing). 2 「注文が減っている」 (orders are decreasing) — although it begins with "I think so too," the example given is one of things getting worse, which contradicts what came before. 3 「仕事が全然増えないもん」 (work isn't increasing at all) — likewise an example of things "not improving," which contradicts the stance of agreeing that the economy is recovering. Answer 1.
